PPC for Recruitment Agencies: When Paid Search Actually Pays for Itself
Paid search is the fastest way for a recruitment agency to appear in front of a client who is looking for a supplier right now. It is also the fastest way to spend a month's marketing budget on candidates searching for jobs you do not have. The channel is not good or bad. The structure is.
This is how agencies run PPC management that returns more than it costs.
Separate Client Intent From Candidate Intent
"Recruitment agency Birmingham" is a client. "Recruitment jobs Birmingham" is a candidate. They share three words and have nothing else in common. Run them as separate campaigns with separate budgets, separate landing pages and separate conversion goals. Mixing them is the single most common reason agency PPC fails.
Campaign Structure That Holds Up
- One campaign per sector, one ad group per location. "IT recruitment agency Leeds" gets its own ad copy and its own landing page, not the homepage.
- Exact and phrase match only until you have data. Broad match on a recruitment budget is how you pay for "recruitment agency jobs" clicks.
- Negative keywords from day one. "Jobs", "vacancies", "careers", "salary", "apply", plus every competitor name you do not want to bid on.
- Location targeting that matches where you actually deliver. If you serve the North West, do not pay for clicks from Kent.
The Landing Page Does Most of the Work
An ad that sends a hiring manager to a generic homepage wastes the click. The landing page should name the sector, name the city, show proof (time-to-fill, placements, logos where allowed), and offer one action: book a call or request terms. Nothing else. Every navigation link is a way to leave.
Numbers That Matter
Cost per click is irrelevant on its own. Track cost per enquiry, enquiry-to-brief rate, and fee per brief. A campaign that costs 60 per enquiry and converts one in four enquiries into a 6,000 fee is spending 240 to earn 6,000. That is the arithmetic that justifies the budget, and it is the report the owner should see monthly.
Paid and Organic Together
PPC buys visibility today; SEO builds it for the years after. Run them from the same sector and location plan so the landing pages built for ads become the pages that rank organically. Our guide to SEO for recruitment agencies covers that side, and digital growth consulting is where we plan both channels against one set of targets.
Once the enquiries arrive, they need to be followed up in hours, not days. That is a CRM problem, and we have written about solving it with GoHighLevel for recruitment agencies.
